I purchased this after being sent home from the hospital after knee surgery. I was in agony and my entire leg from the knee to the toes became horridly edematous. Looking for more constant pain relief than what pills were providing, I searched for an ice water circulating machine. I was pleasantly surprised that the cost was reasonable and ordered this after comparing various ones. I especially appreciate being able to adjust the level of coldness with a remote as well as the remote giving me control over how long the ice water circulates as well as the length of pauses between active circulation. Immobility makes the remote priceless. The pain relief I got was instantaneous AND complete! It gave me the break from constant excruciating pain immediately. The swelling in my leg also began to slowly subside. I used it lying down with my leg elevated on a foam wedge. I also used it sitting in my recliner. At our age of 69 years, we found it super easy to set up and get running. I used it for several weeks and and very happy that I bought this. This is a relatively small size and doesn’t weight a lot empty – weighs a bit with ice and water but that can be added once it is in the place you are going to be using it. It is easily portable – just needs an electrical outlet within about 5 feet. I highly recommend purchasing this if you are planning to have any type of orthopedic surgery (although I suspect it would be useful for other types of surgery also.) I also recommend this for chronic pain or injuries. My only suggestion is that if you are the least bit a “larger” person (I weigh 200 lbs. at 5’3″) that you get the large “blanket” rather than the knee wrap as with the swelling after surgery I could barely get the edges of the knee wrap to meet to velcro. I certainly wish I had gotten the larger “blanket”, but made do until the swelling receded quite a bit and the wrap fit my leg better. Even so, it was an incredible relief. One of the best purchases ever. After reading several questions and reviews I have to add the following: The remote has been improved – you can control the temperature with the new improved programable timer and temperature control remote. You have 4 choices of temperature control. Works fantastic! Direct from their website: “The combination programmable timer & temperature flow control (#DFT) is a direct replacement for the programmable timer (#DTP), which has been discontinued. In addition to custom cold therapy “on” and “off” cycles, this combination remote allows you to adjust the flow of the water through the system, which will in-turn make the water temperature less cold.”

I wrote review below yesterday. Today I got call back from company. Not happy with defective product. Am very pleased with quick response this morning. They are sending me new timer at no charge. Appreciated the quick response and solution to the problem. From one star to 4I bought this last year but my knee surgery was postponed. I am due to have knee replacement done in a week. I worked hard to get it up and running with that piece of crap they call a remote. I did get it turned on and pumping . I turned it off and unplugged to unit and later tried again. Took me about 20 minutes to get it to turn on and pump water. Today I could not get it to go on. The remote flashes rotating lights constantly even when I push the off button. I unplugged it over and over again and still only get lights flashing that never turn off unless I unplug from wall. Now I spent this money and never ill get to use it. I am in Hawaii and company is on Eastern mainland US. I bypassed the timer and it is pumping water.

When we received our Polar Ice Machine we could not get it to work properly. Unfortunately we would be needing it the very next day. We called the company (after hours on their Eastern time) and left a frantic message. We hopefully expected to receive a call back the next morning. Amazingly we received a call back that same evening which would have made it well after hours for them. The employee carefully walked us through the issue and decided we had a faulty control. He said the part would be shipped overnight. Amazing service! We later found out that the “employee” that helped troubleshoot our issue and sent a new part was in fact the CEO of the company! The ice machine has worked very well in helping healing and recovery for my husband’s knee replacement. Thank you Polar Active for your quality product and superior, friendly customer service!

I am a nurse and I put a great deal of research into the purchase of this cooling unit. I also looked closely at Ossur, but ultimately settled on Polar Active Ice.. I found the shape and size of the foot pad to be well designed and easily large enough to accommodate a woman’s size 9 foot. The extra coverage at the top allowed it to envelop the toes to help keep them cold, but not too cold. Along with the bunionectomy, I had two hammer toe repairs and a. mallet toe repaired, which is the one you see the pin sticking out of under the white tape. The pad is easily opened so that one could check the toes to make sure they are not getting too cold. The in and outflow tubes are on the side of the boot. This is an improvement over Polar Arctic Ice’s large boot foot pad, which has the tubes running directly behind the calf. In the older design, the weight of the leg resting directly over the tubes compressed them obstructing water flow. The older, large, boot-shaped foot pad, is difficult to put one’s foot into especially if you have a bulky dressing which is typical after foot surgery. One would be forced to angle their foot in a way that is difficult and painful. It also concerns me that with the closed boot design, it might also get too cold around the toes within the closed the boot. This design makes it more of a hassle to check the toes, which means it’s likely to happen less often. In the picture with the open cooler, I am showing a piece of clear, flexible plastic that had come as part of the packaging box from a product I had bought in the past. I used this plastic to deflect and thereby reduce the noise created by the water from the return tube splashing onto the bottles or directly onto an ice/water mix. The plastic fanned the water to the sides and eliminated the splashing noise. It was almost like a babbling brook sound, which some people may find peaceful. One might be able to achieve the same effect by cutting a Solo cup and half, lengthwise. Having a higher water level might help also. The pump is otherwise very quiet.I really like the timer feature on the unit because it allows me to set to run times and off times and not have to think about it again. This is especially handy at night. The timer was one of the big selling points of the active ice unit compared to the Ossur. The other limiting factor of the Ossur is it’s smaller reservoir. It only holds 3 frozen water bottles compared to Arctic Ice’s 6 bottle capacity. For foot surgery, the Arctic Ice’s foot pad provides more complete coverage, including the toe area, than Ossur’s. Additionally, the design of the Arctic Ice’s foot pad makes it easier to put on unassisted. In closing, Arctic Ice is made by a family owned business in Stow, Ohio. This makes it easier to buy replacement parts or order any additional pads or upgraded features that you wish to have. When you buy American made products, you help support American jobs and American businesses just like this one.

As described- the most complete and well written instructions on use and care- they went the extra mile. The submersible pump normally has a filter on the water intake – this one does not- a card insert in the instructions said it does not have a filter- given the narrow water channels in the actual therapy pad you place around the body area you must follow the daily and weekly clean instructions. If using the frozen water bottles(recommended) make sure there are no labels attached as lint ,particles and water soluble adhesive can get into the coupling where the pad attaches. The timer really work’s as you can set the on/off periods to run through the night.Make sure you place a cloth between the pad and body and turn it on before attaching the pad- far more effective..Reduces need for pain and swelling medication.Wish I had known about this cold machine before reverse shoulder surgery.

We bought this for my wife’s knee post op recovery. Cold therapy really helped with her pain and swelling. This unit is really great to make icing practical and easy to do. It will keep cold all night and is quiet. She has used it every night and for several hours each day for a month so the unit is durable. As the “ice man” during this process I can’t imagine going though it without a unit like this. Well worth the investment. Additional comment: we use frozen water bottles instead of ice cubes; much easier and better results.

Having a Polar Ice Therapy Machine is a post surgery game changer!! It truly has lessened my need for pain medication and sped up my recovery after full knee replacement!! I used it pre-surgery for tears and swelling and it brought such relief as well! I feel like this should be a requirement after surgery. I had to go 24 hours without it and was surprised at how much of a difference it made- I couldn’t wait to get back to it!!This company is fabulous to work with as well!! They are very responsive to questions or concerns. I’ve recommended this to friends and even bought one for a friend!!

Two months after my total knee replacement surgery, my 21 year old TheraCool therapy system quit working. I did a lot of research to find the best possible replacement and the Polar Ice 3.0 was the clear winner. This is an amazing, high quality system with a quiet motor and a programmable timer. It is made in the USA and the thorough instructions are easy to follow and in English. There are a lot of pad options and accessories to customize the unit.I highly recommend this machine. It definitely deserves all of the five star ratings and was an excellent purchase. You won’t regret buying it.

Recovering from big toe fusion was made easy and pain free with this item. I can’t say if everyone would be so lucky but this would have to help no matter what! Using 6 frozen water bottles instead of ice made this much easier to use – no mess with emptying – just switched out the bottles! The timer is a very important feature. I was able to leave it on all the time and set it for 20 on 20 off just like the doctor ordered. Well worth the expense for relief and convenience.

Product is great for shoulder surgery pain relief. No leaks with any fittings as other reviews mentioned. Cooler and pad can sweat if room air is humid which of course is not a product defect and wasnt enough to get through light shirt and reach bandages. Recommend the water bottles frozen versus ice to provide longer cooling. Lasts about 4 to 6 hours with 6 bottles. Wish it was a little longer to last entire night but not bad. Great customer service. First one got a loose power connection after a week. Called company and they sent a new one to replace overnight without any question or pushback. This was critical to get quick when you hurt. Definitely recommend this company and product.
